Thirty newly elected members of the Gilgit-Baltistan regional parliament took the constitutional oath during a session held by the parliament, in which its speaker, Nazir Ahmad Advocate, administered the oath to the members and then congratulated them on winning membership of the assembly.
The members who took the oath are distributed among the political blocs as follows: thirteen members from the Pakistan People’s Party, nine members from the Pakistan Muslim League–Nawaz, six members from the Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party, one member from the Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen, in addition to one independent member.
In its next stage, the session is scheduled to complete the procedures for electing the speaker of the parliament, his deputy, and the chief minister. According to available information, the Pakistan People’s Party candidate, Imran Nadeem, is heading toward winning the parliament’s speakership unopposed, to be followed by the election of the chief minister, which is also expected to be won by the same party’s candidate, Amjad Hussain Advocate, by acclamation and without competition.
The speaker had adjourned the session until three o’clock this afternoon, when a new speaker of the assembly and his deputy are to be elected. It is worth noting that the announcement of results in three electoral constituencies in Gilgit remains suspended pursuant to a court order.
