Pakistan and the United Kingdom agreed on Wednesday to strengthen bilateral cooperation in counterterrorism, combating illegal migration and human smuggling, as well as expanding institutional collaboration and police training programs. The understanding was reached during a meeting between Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and British Minister of State for the Middle East, South Asia and the United Nations Hamish Falconer.

According to Pakistan’s Ministry of Interior, the British official praised the “positive and significant” role played by Pakistan in facilitating the peace agreement between the United States and Iran. He stated that Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir had played a historic role in promoting peace and that the agreement had enhanced Pakistan’s image as a supporter of global stability.

The two sides also agreed to expand cooperation in counterterrorism and efforts to combat illegal migration and human smuggling, in addition to strengthening institutional cooperation, enhancing the capabilities of security agencies and developing police training programs. Mohsin Naqvi stressed that the Pakistani authorities were taking strict action against illegal migration and human trafficking networks, noting that the joint “Upskill” project had contributed to strengthening the capacities of Pakistani institutions.

The two sides also discussed bilateral relations and regional developments and agreed to work together to address the issue of fraudulent student visas. The Pakistani minister further emphasized the need for the Afghan authorities to prevent their territory from being used for activities that threaten Pakistan’s security.
