An earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale struck parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and the capital, Islamabad, on Monday.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, the earthquake was recorded at 3:22 p.m., at a depth of 215 kilometers, with its epicenter in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan. It was felt in a number of areas, including Peshawar, Islamabad, Mansehra, Swat, Battagram, and Abbottabad.

In the aftermath of the tremor, the spokesman for the province’s rescue service (Rescue 1122) called on citizens to contact the emergency helpline immediately in the event of any emergency.

An earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale had struck Islamabad and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa this past April, while earlier that same month the region experienced tremors following a 6.1-magnitude earthquake that occurred in the Hindu Kush region.

It is worth noting that Pakistan lies at the meeting point of three major tectonic plates—the Arabian, Eurasian, and Indian plates—which places it across five seismic zones. The intersection of a number of fault lines means that tectonic activity remains a recurring phenomenon in this region.
