Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari welcomed the signing of the “Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding” between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran, describing it as a historic moment for the region and the world.

In a message marking the occasion, Zardari said the conflict that erupted in February 2026 had inflicted immense suffering on the peoples of the region and caused severe disruption to global energy supplies, trade, and economic stability. He expressed his hope that such a tragedy would never be repeated, and that the countries of the region would henceforth devote their energies to development, prosperity, and the welfare of their peoples.

The Pakistani president praised the tireless diplomatic efforts made by Prime Minister Mohammad Shehbaz Sharif, his deputy and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Army Chief Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, affirming that they contributed significantly to bringing the parties’ viewpoints closer together and leading them to an agreement. He noted that Pakistan had played a principled, balanced, and constructive role throughout the crisis, consistently calling for dialogue, restraint, and the peaceful settlement of differences, while keeping channels of communication open with all parties concerned.

Zardari also commended the leadership of U.S. President Donald Trump, and the Iranian leadership—represented by the Supreme Leader, President Masoud Pezeshkian, and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi—for ensuring a diplomatic resolution to the conflict and advancing the march toward peace. He further acknowledged the valuable support provided by brotherly and friendly countries, including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Egypt, as well as Russia and China, whose encouragement of dialogue helped strengthen the pursuit of peace.

The Pakistani president called on all parties to implement the memorandum in full and to accelerate efforts to reach the final agreement within the set timeframe, so as to ensure lasting peace and stability. In this context, he said that heroes are those who end wars, not those who are eager to ignite them.

Zardari expressed his hope that this memorandum—which bears the imprint of Islamabad and Pakistan in all its details—would form the basis for a comprehensive and lasting peace in the region, allowing countries to focus on economic development, energy cooperation, and the advancement of their peoples. He concluded by saying that war brings nothing but destruction and misery, and that peace is the only path to progress, affirming that Pakistan would continue to stand by all brotherly countries in the region in their collective march toward peace and prosperity.
